On March 28, 2025, the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL) received a visit from a group of 40 students and 3 professors from HOGent (University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Belgium), as part of the international “Learning Festival” program.The Belgian delegation, made up of students from the areas of real estate and wood construction, was warmly welcomed by professors António Serrador, Elisabete Alegria, Dulce Henriques, Patrícia Barata and Vítor Manteigas, who led the reception and activities on campus.Among the most memorable moments of the visit was the joint reflection on sustainable practices in construction, an increasingly relevant topic in the European academic and professional context. Visitors also had the opportunity to see the construction site of ISEL's new eco-campus up close, which represents a clear commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability in engineering.The visit was part of a logic of sharing knowledge and good practices, strengthening ties between European higher education institutions and promoting international cooperation in the construction sector and sustainable urban development. ISEL congratulates itself on the election of several of its current and former professors to the national bodies of the Order of Engineers for the three-year period 2025-2028. The elections, which took place recently, culminated in the re-election of Fernando Manuel de Almeida Santos as the new President of the Order of Engineers. The new mandate will last three years, during which the new leadership is committed to implementing its proposals and promoting the development of engineering in Portugal. The electoral process included voting for several bodies, such as the Assembly of Representatives, the Supervisory Board, the National Fiscal Council and the Jurisdictional Council. On March 27th, a maintenance and planting action took place on the ISEL Campus in urban mini-forests, also known as biodiversity islands, following the Miyawaki Method. This initiative was part of the ISEL Eco-Campus program and involved the active participation of students, teachers and staff, promoting the involvement of the academic community in the revitalization of green spaces. The organization and support of the activity were the responsibility of Vítor Gordo, mentor of the Biodiversity Islands project, in collaboration with the Nurseries of Lisbon City Council. The event reinforced ISEL's commitment to sustainability, promoting ecological practices on campus. To mark World Tree Day, an information plaque was installed about the Biodiversity Islands, highlighting their importance for ecological regeneration and environmental balance. Furthermore, several native species were planted close to building A, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity on the campus. This action demonstrates ISEL's commitment to fostering sustainable practices and promoting environmental awareness among the academic community, reinforcing the role of urban miniforests in promoting biodiversity and creating a more balanced and healthy environment. In the week of March 26-28, ISEL was represented at the International Week of HOGent – ​​University of Applied Sciences and Arts, in Belgium, by Professor António Serrador, advisor for the area of ​​internationalization, and by Dr. Susana Teque, leader of the External Relations and Internationalization Service.Throughout the week, ISEL representatives actively participated in the program's various activities, which included visits to HOGent laboratories and research centers, networking sessions and moments of exchanging experiences with colleagues from several European universities. The agenda also included institutional presentations and debates on the challenges of higher education in Europe.ISEL's presence at this event allowed for the establishment of new strategic international contacts, creating opportunities for future academic and scientific cooperation projects. According to the participants, the first steps towards joint initiatives are already underway, reinforcing ISEL's role as an active partner in European higher education networks.This participation is part of ISEL's internationalization strategy, promoting direct contact with partner institutions and strengthening academic collaboration across borders.
The Sines and Algarve Ports Administration (APS) has, since March 10, had a new Board of Directors, composed of professor Jaime Puna (DEQ/ISEL) and Fernanda Nunes as executive members supporting the newly appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors Pedro do Ó Ramos. The new executive faces important challenges linked to the energy transition and environmental sustainability, while continuing the strategy of innovation and digitalization. With this new management, APS reinforces its commitment to expanding its presence in the international shipping market, remaining at the service of the port, logistics and industrial community of the ports of Sines and the Algarve. The new Board of Directors also highlights its commitment to supporting Iberian importers and exporters, thus contributing to the growth of the national economy. APS text and image  
ISEL opened yesterday, March 13, the new study room "ESPAÇO SOCICARRIL", open 24 hours a day, offering all higher education students a modern and functional space to support their studies. The new infrastructure, located on the ground floor of building P, has a lounge area and an area equipped with vending machines, providing greater comfort to users. With approximately 300m² of area and capacity for 84 spaces in the internal area, the "ESPAÇO SOCICARRIL" was designed to meet the needs of students, promoting an environment suitable for studying and academic interaction. The construction of this new space was financed by ISEL, also with the support of benefactors Engineer Arménio Costa and Engineer Brito dos Santos, from the company Socicarril Lda. This initiative arises in response to student requests, reinforcing the institution's commitment to creating adequate conditions for the academic success of its community. The inauguration ceremony was attended by the President of ISEL, Professor José Nascimento, as well as Engineer Armênio Costa and Engineer Brito dos Santos. Also present were the President of the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon (IPL), Professor António Belo, and the members of the Permanent Council, who met for the first time at ISEL under the presidency of Professor António Belo. With the inauguration of "ESPAÇO SOCICARRIL", ISEL reaffirms its mission to support students, offering better conditions for their academic and personal development.
